Clean printing process of cotton with natural dyes: Effect of paste formulation components on printing performances

Abstract: A novel natural dye Corchorus olitorius L was investigated in the preparation of the printing pastes for screen printing of cotton fabric. To ensure an ecological printing, greener thickeners were used such as: sodium alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose and Ceratonia Siliqua L. flour. The nature and concentration of thickener, dyestuff and urea concentrations, mordant type and fixation method were explored. Printed cotton fabric qualities were evaluated by determining different parameters: colo… Show more

“…During direct-screen printing, preference is given to high-viscous dye/pigment pastes so as to obtain patterns with clearly defined outlines . Hence, there is the need to add some viscosity regulator to improve the viscosity of the printing precursor systems. Zhou et al prepared a printing paste using polystyrene microspheres, carbon black, and polyacrylate (PA) water-based adhesive, which was then applied onto a white polyester fabric via direct-screen printing to obtain non-iridescent color patterns. The prepared PCs showed high structural stability and clear pattern outline due to the presence of PA.…”

“…Moreover, high-viscous dye/pigment pastes are preferentially used in conventional screen printing to obtain the patterns with clearly defined outlines. Hence, there is the need in thickeners, which play the role of viscosity adjustment in the printing precursor systems. , However, the addition of a thickening agent to the assembly system of colloidal microspheres enable to not only yield high viscosity but also block the free movement of nanospheres during their assembly. As a result, the PCs obtained show a short-range order/long-range quasi-order structure with a noniridescent structural color.…”
