Cleanliness of Ti-bearing Al-killed ultra-low-carbon steel during different heating processes

Abstract: During the production of Ti-bearing Al-killed ultra-low-carbon (ULC) steel, two different heating processes were used when the converter tapping temperature or the molten steel temperature in the Ruhrstahl-Heraeus (RH) process was low: heating by Al addition during the RH decarburization process and final deoxidation at the end of the RH decarburization process (process-I), and increasing the oxygen content at the end of RH decarburization, heating and final deoxidation by one-time Al addition (process-II). “…Aluminum deoxidized IF steel has become the main material for automobile outer panel production in the world because of its good deep drawing performance and economy. 1,2) According to the application characteristics of automobile outer plate, IF steel is required to have high cleanliness to ensure that the steel plate has good surface quality and deep stamping performance. 3,4) In recent years, the majority of research institutes and iron and steel enterprises have been committed to improving the cleanliness of aluminum deoxidized IF steel by optimizing the traditional…”

“…Since the slag in the refining process could control and remove inclusions from the molten steel effectively 5 , slag systems and models were designed to investigate the influence of the mechanical properties [6][7][8] . The improved methods for controlling inclusions have thus been reported [9][10][11][12] . When the Al 2 O 3 content in the refining slag increased from 14.71% to 22.3%, the number density of inclusions increased from 5.2 to 6.5 and the largest size of inclusion raised from 7.3 to 8.3 μm in spring steel 13 .…”

“…Carryover converter slag, open-eye by gas bubbling, weak oxide components in refractories and fluxes, and contamination in ferroalloys may be a few of the sources. It causes the unwanted formation of oxide inclusions and clogs in nozzles in steelmaking and casting processes, [3,4] and eventually induces defects in the cast product.…”
