Clementine images of the lunar sample‐return stations: Refinement of FeO and TiO2 mapping techniques

Abstract: Abstract. Clementine UVVIS images of the lunar sample-return sites have been processed and used to produce refined calibrations for the iron and titanium determination algorithms of Lucey et al. [ 1995, 1996]. The high spatial resolution of the Clementine data permits individual sampling stations to be resolved at the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 landing sites. We find an excellent, linear correlation between the spectral Fe and Ti parameters and the average FeO and TiO2 contents of soils sampled at each site or stat… Show more

“…In the following years, many researchers worked on improving and refining the mathematical algorithms (Johnson et al 1985(Johnson et al , 1991Blewett et al 1997;Lucey et al 1998Lucey et al , 2000Gillis and Jolliff 2001;Gillis et al 2003Gillis et al , 2004. “…After obtaining data from Clementine, a series of empirical models were developed to predict the FeO content from Clementine's UVVIS images [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Among these models, Lucey's model is one of the most popular, following a series of refinements [7][8][9].…”

“…Information about the variability and spatial distribution of iron abundance is important to understand the petrogenesis of lunar rocks and thus the nature and origin of the Moon [3]. Many models have been suggested to extract iron abundance from Clementine's UVVIS images [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. As more mission datasets (e.g.…”

“…Among these models, Lucey's model has been one of the most popular and has undergone a series of refinements [33,34]. Lucey's method introduces a simple relation between the UV/VIS ratio (415 nm/750 nm) and TiO 2 content in soil of a mature mare to a titanium-sensitive parameter θ Ti , an angular measure of the TiO 2 content of soils taken from landing sites and sample stations in the plot of UV/VIS versus visible reflectance, to suppress the effect of maturity [29][30][31][32]. From analysis of Clementine UVVIS data, Lucey et al [32] derived the following formula for θ Ti and thus wrote an algorithm to predict TiO 2 content:…”
