CLIC–LHC-based FEL–nucleus collider: Feasibility and physics search potential

Abstract: The feasibility of a CLIC-LHC based FEL-nucleus collider is investigated. It is shown that the proposed scheme satisfies all requirements of an ideal photon source for the Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence method. The tunability, monochromaticity and high polarization of the FEL beam together with high statistics and huge energy of LHC nucleus beams will give an unique opportunity to determine different characteristics of excited nuclear levels. The physics potential of the proposed collider is illustrated for a … Show more

“…A more sophisticated approach to probe the levels in 208 Pb by irradiating beam nuclei at the LHC with a free electron laser has been proposed in Ref. [37] to make an intense source of 1 MeV< E γ < 400 MeV photons. The status of the photon-nucleus collider proposed in Ref.…”

“…Construction of linear + − colliders (or dedicated linac) and muon colliders (or dedicated muon ring) tangential to the future circular pp colliders, FCC or SppC, as shown in Figure 1, will give opportunity to use highest energy proton beams in order to obtain highest center of mass energy in lepton-hadron and photon-hadron collisions (for earlier studies on linac-ring type , , , and colliders, see reviews [6,7] and papers [8][9][10][11][12][13][14]). …”
