Agriculture is anticipated to remain the economy's backbone for the foreseeable future, with agricultural operations employing a large majority of Uganda's work force 72%. The aim of this review was to assess the agriculture extension and advisory services; brief description of agriculture extension and advisory service system in Uganda focusing on typology providers, dominant models used and target groups; providing examples of agriculture extension and advisory services related to climate smart agriculture with specific adaptation and mitigation and identifying and discussing the innovative approach and methods being used by different service providers in climate smart related extension. Farmers' groups, government organizations, non-governmental organizations, commercial organizations, and universities are among the typologies employed in Uganda's agriculture extension service. The agriculture extension and advisory services related to climate smart agriculture were integrated soil fertility management, crop rotation, cover crops and green manure, rotational grazing, seasonally adapted planting time and agroforestry systems. The innovative approach and methods being used by different service providers in climate smart related extension included extension methods for transfer of climate knowledge, training and visit extension and unified extension approaches, climate awareness mass media campaigns, ICT supported farmers in adaptation and mitigation, farmer field school and climate-smart villages. It was concluded that climate-smart extension approaches need to be considered as part of a broader set of adaptation measures and policies for agricultural systems at a range of scales through ICT integration. The study recommended for a strategic plan for women engagement in agriculture extension services by the Ugandan government.

Mopani District Municipality in the northeast of South Africa is largely semi-arid and frequently affected by meteorological droughts. The recent 2015/16 event had devastating impacts on water levels, crop yields, livestock herds and rural livelihoods. We investigated the nature of the drought hazard; its impacts, including vulnerability of rural communities in Mopani District and adaptation strategies they have employed to cope with drought. A mixed methods approach with both quantitative and qualitative datasets was used. The district was divided into two distinct climatic areas: the drier eastern lowveld and the wetter western bushveld. Questionnaires were administered among community members whilst key informant interviews were conducted among relevant government and municipal officials. Climate data was used to characterize historical drought using a Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index whilst vegetation anomaly maps were used to demonstrate impacts. Spatially distinct patterns of drought conditions were evident with harsh and dry conditions towards the east. It was found that nearly half the time there is some form of drought or another in the district mostly linked to the remote El Nino phenomenon. In several areas, rain-fed agriculture is no longer tenable, with a direct impact on rural livelihoods. A Household Vulnerability Index determined variable levels of vulnerability such that different strategies are employed to adapt to drought some of which cause environmental problems. Local government intervention strategies include supply of seeds and fertilisers, providing cheap fodder and supplying water using trucks. The findings of this study contribute to disaster risk reduction efforts in a region that is highly vulnerable to current and future climate-risks.

An Assessment of Public Knowledge and Potential Health Impacts of Global Warming in Ghana

Global warming is a serious threat to human existence. The relatively higher level of global warming in recent times poses higher health risks to humans, both directly and indirectly. The aim of the study was to investigate public knowledge of global warming and its effects on human health. A nationally representative survey of Ghanaian adults ( N = 1130 ) was conducted from November 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019. Results show that 84.4% of the respondents understood the meaning of global warming. Respondents’ perceived causes of global warming include natural processes, deforestation, act of the gods, burning of fossil fuel, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from vehicles and industries. The majority of the respondents (83.4%) indicated that global warming has an impact on human health, while 8.5% indicated that it does not. Majority (78.6%) of the respondents are willing to support efforts to reduce the intensity of global warming. Television (19.1%) and social media (18.6%) were the leading preferred methods for receipt of global warming information. These findings provide useful insights for policy directions. The Government of Ghana and other stakeholders in health should develop a communication strategy to increase and sustain publicity and education of the citizenry on global warming.
