Climate change and health: impacts, vulnerability, adaptation and mitigation

Abstract: Since 1950, average land temperatures in Australia have risen by 0.9°C. 1 A decline in rainfall has been observed for much of eastern and southwestern Australia, whereas northwestern Australia has experienced wetter summers. 1 Globally, the trend of climatic variability is similar. 2 The process will continue with a projected average global temperature increase of 1.8 to 4.0°C (average 3°C) by 2100 depending on actions taken to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and scenarios for future development. 2 Rainfa… Show more

“…With climate warming, the impact of heat waves on general population morbidity and mortality risks has been extensively reported in temperate and tropical climates and in both urban and rural regions (Bai et al 2014;Berko et al 2014;Chung et al 2015;Kjellstrom and Weaver 2009;Yip et al 2008). Projections of climate change over the coming century suggest increasing incidences of heat-related mortality in both the general public and in occupational settings (Gubernot et al 2014;Jay and Kenny 2010;Kjellstrom et al 2013;Lundgren et al 2013;Xiang et al 2014).…”

“…Adaptation is defined as "adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities" [3] (p. 869). Farmers in developing countries apply different adaptation measures [4,5]. Some of these adaptation measures fall into the category of sustainable land management (SLM) practices.…”

“…by increasing the range and prevalence of pathogenic agents associated with water-and vector-borne diseases such as cholera and dengue fever); and indirect impacts (e.g. loss of livelihood among outdoor/manual workers whose income depends on high levels of physical activity; Lipp, Huq, and Colwell 2002;WHO 2003;Patz et al 2005;Kovats and Akhtar 2008;Kjellstrom and Weaver 2009;Friel et al 2011b). Table 1 also demonstrates that the greatest burden of heat-related health mortality and morbidity will be felt among urban slum dwellers, low socio-economic groups and minority ethnic groups (Friel et al 2011b).…”
