The brown mussel Perna perna is a marine bivalve that is widely distributed and consumed along the east coast of Algeria. Due to its filter-feeding capacity, this mollusk can accumulate large quantities of pathogenic microorganisms from the surrounding waters, thus acting as bio-indicator of coastal environments. The objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence and distribution of fecal indicators and pathogenic bacteria in seawaters and mussels collected from four different sites in the Gulf of Annaba through physicochemical, biochemical and molecular analysis. The obtained results revealed that the levels of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) were alarmingly high at Sidi Salem and Rezgui Rachid when compared with the two other sites (p < 0.05) and largely exceeded the permissible limits.Besides, P. perna collected from all sites were several fold more contaminated by these germs than seawater samples, notably, during the warm season of the study period. Biochemical and molecular analysis showed that isolated bacteria from both environmental compartments were mostly potentially pathogenic species such as E. coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas and Proteus.These principal findings demonstrate the strong involvement of anthropogenic activities on the microbiological quality of the Gulf and highlight the role of P. perna as an effective bio-indicator of the bacteriological quality of coastal waters.

Algeria as an important North African and Mediterranean country with remarkable bioclimatic, edaphic, and political characteristics is under many sorts of negative stress affecting considerably alimentary dependence. Today, Algerian agriculture presents a worrying record. Several warning signs show that the sector is only surviving thanks to massive imports of milk, grains, seeds and chemical fertilizers. The current agricultural model is overtaken by dependence on foreign markets and recourse to costly public subsidies which come exclusively from revenues derived from hydrocarbon exports. Indeed, Algeria is located in region characterized by high water deficit and, poor hydraulic potential, affecting considerably the economy and food security. This situation is more due to mismanagement than an inability to produce enough and healthy food for all Algerians. The current governance is totally inappropriate. The solution mainly involves training, research and technology transfer. In the present perspective paper, we identify with real statistics, organizational, structural, technical, and ecological deficiency causing the suicidal alimentary dependence with alarming repercussion on health and economy. A series of items are proposed to be adopted in order to enable food security in view of available and mobilizable natural resources.

Reservoirs are important for flood control, production of hydroelectric power, fishing, water harvesting and storage. Climate is changing, population and anthropogenic activities are increasing which increase sedimentation rate to most of reservoirs reducing their capacity. With climate change in mind water are becoming scarce resources which need proper storage when available and suitable flood control in areas with unpredicted rainfall. Furthermore, population growth and increases energy demand suggesting that there is a need of sustainable management of dams so as to control flood, produce more hydroelectric power and store water for use in dry season. Sedimentation is one of the factors influencing storage capacity of the reservoir. Understanding sedimentation rate, source of sediment and carryout proper management measures is one among of the important methods to preserve dams. 137 Cs and 210 Pb are important radionuclides for investigating sedimentation rate in reservoir. The method has been used for more than two decades in developed countries with less use in developing countries. In this study a sediment core was sampled at the centre of Nyumba ya Mungu reservoir in Tanzania then the samples were transported to China for processing and analysis. High-purity Germanium detector was used to analyze 210 Pb and 137 Cs. The results showed that rate of sedimentation in the reservoir ranged from 0.21 to 0.65 cm/year with more sediment coming from Kikuletwa than Ruvu tributary. Proper utilization of this method can bring sustainable management of water, save communities from flood disaster and high production of hydroelectric power.
