Climate change and water resources in Algeria: vulnerability, impact and adaptation strategy

Abstract: The climate changes going on for a long time now have ceased to be a scientific curiosity. They constitute the major environmental question which dominates our time and pose the major challenge to environmental organizations of control. Water is one of the most important raw materials in Algeria. Because of its importance, it is essential to know its vulnerability with the climate changes. In Algeria, the vulnerability due to the climate changes is expressed through several aspects: demographic explosion, prob… Show more

“…According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report ( 2013), Algeria will experience an increase in temperatures between 1 and 3.7 °C over the next few years. Consequently, this may lead to enhance the proliferation and persistence of bacteria for a long time in seawater and cause the deterioration of water resources (Mohammed andAl-Amin 2018, Barreras et al 2019). This hypothesis was confirmed in the current study by significant and positive correlations between E. coli and FS, and the temperature revealed by Spearman correlation test (p < 0.05) and PCA analysis, which is consistent with other studies (Koirala et al 2008;Gutiérrez-Cacciabue et al 2014, Abia et al 2015Islam et al 2017).…”

“…It is predicted that the rainfall deficit persists because it depends on known effects of global warming leading to natural scarcity of water (Programme National Exceptionnel, 2011;Bhattarai, 2017;Bouderbala, 2018). The vital role of water characterized by scarcity and shortage constitutes challenges to security of the population and economy which is closely related to health, environmental and, food security in particular (Mohammed and Al-Amin, 2018). "Water and food", "water is a food" or "water makes food" or even "water is food", all these terms make water an essential requirement for sustainable development in the cultural and cultural production of food.…”

“…Besides climate, there are other drivers of global change, including population increase, economic development and urbanization [4]. These change will increase demand for water resources and energy of which water reservoir is one among of the methods to minimize water shortage and increase production of hydroelectric power.…”
