Climate regime shifts and community reorganization in the Gulf of Alaska: how do recent shifts compare with 1976/1977?

Abstract: Climate regime shifts have recently occurred in the North Pacific (1998–1999) and the Arctic (2000), but the nature of biological reaction to these events is poorly understood. An index of local climate (1960–2005), and data from commercial fishery catches (1960–2004) and from small-mesh trawl surveys (1972–2005) are used to assess the impacts of these climate events in the Subarctic Gulf of Alaska. Non-linear regression showed that survey catch composition strongly responded to local climate at lags of 2 and … Show more

“…These changes were more evident in the east than in other regions. An apparent decline in the catch per unit effort of Pacific cod from 2000 to 2005 was also noted in analysis of small-mesh shrimp surveys conducted in the Kodiak area (Litzow 2006). Interannual shifts in the contribution of capelin and sand lance to the diet of black-legged kittiwakes foraging on the east coast of Kodiak were also recorded, with a decline in sand lance and concurrent increase in capelin between (Kildaw et al 2005.…”

“…Litzow (2006) compared PDO regime shifts to ecological time series; the PDO shift in 1976/77 was captured but the subsequent shift in 1998/99 was not. This shift was better captured by the Victoria Pattern index.…”

“…This shift was better captured by the Victoria Pattern index. Litzow (2006) defined a new index, the NPGO, which is highly correlated with oceanographic properties, and also with the Victoria Pattern. The Victoria Pattern has basically been replaced in practice by the NPGO -North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (Bond, personal communication).…”

“…For example, sea-surface temperatures and ocean salinity in the North Pacific are influenced not only by annual phenomena such as ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) events but also by decadal-scale shifts in climate and oceanography that are superimposed on longer-term trends in ocean conditions related to global warming (Mantua and Hare 2002, Peterson and Schwing 2003, Litzow 2006, Royer and Grosch 2006. Collectively, these dynamics render assessments of recovery based on such equilibrium metrics as "a return to prespill conditions" problematic.…”
