Climate regionalization and trends based on daily temperature and precipitation extremes in the south of the Pampas (Argentina)

Abstract: The south of , as most of Argentina, is a semiarid region. Its economy is based on rain-fed agriculture and livestock. Traditionally, the climate has been studied considering the analyses of monthly and annual climate parameters, but there is evidence that in this type of areas, the short-term climatic events have a substantial impact on the climate. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a climate regionalization from the analysis of daily temperature and precipitation extremes in the south of the Pampas f… Show more

“…We applied Ward's cluster analysis (Ward, 1963) using rescaled Euclidean distance as a dissimilarity measure to group meteorological stations based on the thermal and topographic metrics considered in this study (Table 1), as well as the annual and cold‐semester mean rainfall. This clustering method is well suited for the study of thermo‐pluviometric variability (Lu et al ., 2017; Ferrelli et al ., 2019). We selected a cut‐off point to define the optimal number of clusters according to the “elbow” method.…”
