Climatic limiting factors of North American ecosystems: a remote-sensing based vulnerability analysis

Abstract: Remote-sensing based vulnerability assessments to climate change are a research priority of critical importance for landscape-scale efforts to prioritize conservation and management of ecosystems. Limiting climatic factors can serve as a proxy for quantifying ecosystem vulnerability, since theory predicts that ecosystems close to critical climate thresholds will be more sensitive to interannual variation in limiting climate factors. Here, we analyze time series of enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data for conti… Show more

“…Additionally, there is an increasing trend in studying eucalypts in Australia, as some of these species, despite being considered drought-tolerant, are facing water availability limits in their natural habitats. In particular, advancements in satellite remote sensing technology have enabled studies to be conducted over vast territories that span multiple continents and encompass diverse forest ecosystems [120][121][122][123]. Figure 5 shows the number of research subjects by forest type.…”

“…The extent of the area showing sensitivity to atmospheric drought is much larger than some modelling studies and satellite imagery analysis had suggested 15 , 52 , 53 . Such a broad extent likely reflects the multiple mechanisms linking growth to atmospheric dryness, both directly through stomatal conductance reducing growth or indirectly through lower soil moisture levels 20 , 21 , 24 , 26 , 29 , 54 .…”

“…Given the variability we observed in climatic suitability across Cassin's Sparrow's range, along with the disparities noted between suitability-and abundance-derived perspectives of this species' status, an updated, state-by-state look at the species' distribution and conservation status is needed in order to better understand regional vulnerabilities and patterns of change. Such an exercise would also be an opportunity to examine the potential of deriving a useful climate change risk metric from retrospective ENM trends that could improve species vulnerability assessments across taxa [7,[192][193][194][195].…”
