Clinical and Immunologic Effects of Sublingual Immunotherapy on Patients with Allergic Rhinitis to House-Dust Mites: 1-Year follow-up Results

Abstract: SLIT improved the symptoms and medication scores in Korean patients with AR from HDM. Laboratory parameters including eosinophil counts, ECP, and specific IgE for D. farinae seemed to be modified after 1-year SLIT. A high ECP level may be a useful parameter to predict the effectiveness of SLIT and select the patient for the treatment.

“…This criterion was modified from a previous study,8 which evaluated allergen-specific immunotherapy as effective if the mean of the visual analog scale scores showed at least a 30% decrease with respect to the visual analog scale score before treatment. The effective response ratio (ER ratio) was defined as the number of patients in the effective response group divided by the total number of patients evaluated during the study period.…”

“…However, the significance of the serum ECP level in PR patients is unclear [24]. Some authors have used serum ECP levels to monitor the efficacy of sublingual immune therapy among patients with AR caused by dust mites in the home [25]. In this study, we found that serum ECP was increased in the AR WO group, compared with other groups.…”

“…Also, very few SLIT studies enrolled participants of Asian descent. Kim et al [7] studied 58 patients with allergic rhinitis and allergy to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae. Symptom scores were significantly improved with reduced medication scores during 12 months of SLIT.…”
