Clinical and Microbiologic Outcomes in Patients Receiving Treatment for Mycobacterium abscessus Pulmonary Disease

“…Jarrand and associates reported the results in 69 patients with M. abscessus and PNTM treated either medically or by a combination of medical and surgical treatment and followed for an average of 34 months following treatment. Overall, only 48% of patients achieved a durable conversion to sputum-negative status; 57% of surgical patients and 28% of medical-only patients [100]. Importantly, molecular identification and subspeciation was not performed.…”

“…However, these measures have their own limitations and may over-or underestimate disease burden (1,2,9). The chronic and slowly progressive nature of the disease, with required treatment of at least 12-18 months, leads to costly prescription medications and recurring hospital visits as a result of relapse or reinfection (10)(11)(12)(13)(14).…”

“…Several recent studies regarding treatment outcome in M. abscessus complex lung disease have been reported, with positive results ranging from 25% to 88% (15)(16)(17). The results of these studies may not be generalizable to all patients, because these were retrospective studies utilizing various regimens with different treatment durations, and many patients included in these studies received treatment in combination with surgery.…”
