Clinical and radiographic evaluation of pulpectomy in primary teeth: a 18-months clinical randomized controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundTo avoid untoward changes when primary teeth are replaced by permanent teeth, resorption of the material used in primary teeth root canal filling should occur at the same rate as root resorption. The Aim of this study was to compare the success rates of a mixed primary root canal filling (MPRCF, ingredients: zinc oxide–eugenol [ZOE], iodoform, calcium hydroxide) to those of ZOE and Vitapex in pulpectomised primary molars.MethodsOne hundred and sixty primary molars from 155 children (average age 5.88 … Show more

“…The 15 studies included in the presented SR (Table ) included 1,669 primary teeth (337 anterior teeth and 1,332 molars), of children aged between 3 and 13 years, pulpectomized and had follow‐up period ranged from 2 (Ozalp, Saroglu, & Sonmez, ; Xiao‐Fang & Xue‐Bin, ) to 30 months (Pramila et al, ) The only study with a follow‐up period shorter than 2 months reported follow‐up data after 1 week (Ping‐ping, ). From these studies, 11 included primary molars only (Al‐Ostwani et al, ; Chen et al, ; Gupta & Das, ; Ming‐zhi et al, ; Ozalp et al, ; Ping‐ping, ; Pramila et al, ; Ramar & Mungara, ; Subramaniam & Gilhotra, ; Trairatvorakul & Chunlasikaiwan, ; Xiao‐Fang & Xue‐Bin, ), and four studies included both primary incisors and molars (Chen & Liu, ; Mortazavi & Mesbahi, ; Wei‐jian, ; Yu‐xiang et al, ).…”

“…Although the radiographic success rate was 85% after 12 months of the follow‐up period, which was comparable with this study results (Trairatvorakul & Chunlasikaiwan, ). Chen et al () reported 100% clinical and radiographic success rates at 6 and 12 months success rates of ZOE pulpectomy (Chen, Liu, & Zhong, ). These differences in findings might be related to the use of two visits pulpectomy method.…”
