Clinical and Radiologic Features of Neuroendocrine Breast Carcinomas

Abstract: Neuroendocrine breast carcinoma is a rare and distinct type of breast carcinoma, with morphologic features similar to those of pulmonary and gastrointestinal tract neuroendocrine tumors. More than 50% of cells express neuroendocrine markers. We documented the clinical and radiologic features of 11 patients with histologically confirmed neuroendocrine breast carcinomas. Clinical manifestations included nipple discharge (6 patients) and palpable masses (5 patients). Lesions were mainly oval or irregular on mammo… Show more

“…Imaging examination such as mammography, ultrasonography, or MRI could provide some helpful imaging findings, but there was still a degree of difficulty in the diagnosis of NEBC by imaging examination; a number of NEBC patients appeared to have signs of common breast carcinomas such as ill-defined margins, irregular shapes, calcification, and so on, and other patients’ breast carcinomas might show regular shapes and well-circumscribed margins just like benign lesions 15,16. As previously reported, the imaging characteristics of NEBC in our study were also variable on radiography (Tables S1 and S2), but the majority of NEBC tended to present poor features in mammography or ultrasonography.…”

“…On the other hand, radiological imaging cannot offer much in differentiating the various lesions. The appearance of breast nodules on MRI and ultrasound is substantially similar to the case of metastatic and primary NENs, as well as the case of breast carcinoma [22,26,69]. Additional radionuclide imaging can be useful in differentiating NENs, as the majority of them express SSTR compared to ductal mammary carcinomas [25,28,70].…”

“…Moreover, morphological and functional imaging can play an important role in differential diagnosis. At mammographic evaluation, the breast NET appears as a more round circumscribed mass, while the breast carcinoma has more speculated edges and often has evidence of microcalcifications, which are usually absent in a NEN of the breast [67,69].…”

“…Patients with neuroendocrine carcinoma have been described as presenting with palpable masses and nipple discharge. [ 18 ] Mammographic features include oval, round, or lobular mass without associated calcifications. [ 17 19 ] Masses are usually circumscribed with a minority of cases having spiculated margins [ Figure 4 ].…”
