Clinical and sonographic characteristics of Warthin-like variant papillary thyroid carcinomas

Abstract: Aim: To summarize the clinical, ultrasonographic (US) and pathological characteristics of Warthin-like variant papillary thyroid carcinomas (WVPTC).Material and methods: Medical records and US images of 32 cases of WVPTCs diagnosed between December, 2006 and September, 2018 were reviewed. Clinical, pathological and US characteristics of these cases were collected and summarized. ACR TI-RADS was followed during the analysis of the US features of the lesions. Results: Totally, 32 patients with 33 WVPTC nodules w… Show more

“…Almost all nodules were solid or nearly solid (97%) and highly hypoechoic (78.8%). They were also wider in shape than tall (81.8%) ( 30 ). These findings agree with those reported by Kim et al., who encountered that the majority of WLPTC nodules were solid (62.5%), hypoechoic (75%), and wider in shape than tall (100%) ( 25 ).…”

“…The initial symptom is often a painless cervical swelling, which was present in about half of the cases ( 15 , 20 , 30 ). The availability of imaging techniques has led to increased incidental diagnoses of WLPTC.…”

“…Conducting a study, Ning et al pointed out some features of WLV-PTC nodules among 32 cases. The author determined that in 97% of the cases, nodules were solid or nearly solid, and in 78.8% they were hypoechoic [ 9 ]. In our report, these assumptions were confirmed.…”

“…In this variant, BRAF V600E mutations are less frequent than in the classic variant (65% vs. 84%) [12], but BRAF mutation is still the most common genetic driver. The most common US features of WV PTCs are a solid composition, hypoechogenicity, and taller-than-wide shape [34,35]. The US pattern of nodules harboring BRAF V600E mutations may differ depending on the presence of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.…”
