Clinical applications of 3D volume MR imaging of the fetal brainin utero

Abstract: 3D volume in utero MR imaging appears to be a promising method in the prenatal assessment of the fetal brain. We propose possible areas of future research that are required to assess the techniques potential to have clinical impact. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

“…Fetal MRI has been useful in evaluating abnormalities of fetal structures which are difficult to thoroughly evaluate by prenatal US alone, with obvious advantages over US in displaying neurological maturation and abnormalities (Grossman et al, 2006 ; Ruiz et al, 2017 ). The use of three-dimensional (3-D) volumetric in utero MRI is a relatively newer modality and allows more accurate measurement of intracranial structure volumes, which can more accurately reflect the growth of the fetal brain than 2-D parameters (Blondiaux and Garel, 2013 ; Jarvis and Griffiths, 2017 ; Kyriakopoulou et al, 2017 ; Takakuwa et al, 2021 ).…”

“…To add accuracy to the morphology side of the axiom, new quantitative methods such as volume-rendering quantifications, diffusion tensor imaging, and functional MRI should be added to such protocols. [7][8][9] The fundamental message from Hart and colleagues' work is a warning against overconfidence in the sole use of iuMRI-based prognostication. Considering that this work was limited to 3 years of follow-up, our knowledge of outcomes in school-age children is currently unexplored territory.…”
