Clinical applications of internal heat source analysis for breast cancer identification

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Nondestructive preoperative breast imaging techniques are widely used for breast cancer testing and diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of quantitative diagnosis via the thermal analysis of abnormal metabolism. Nine hundred forty-eight women who underwent breast biopsy from 2009 to 2013 were investigated. Thermal analysis was used to calculate the internal heat source (i.e., tumor) thermal power for each participant. The applicability and effectiveness of our approach… Show more

“…Some tools, such as mammography, ultrasound and MRI, are important resources that allow for morphological evaluation in different breast diseases. Breast thermography is a functional examination proposed as an aid for investigation of new drugs, ( 27 ) chemotherapeutic agents, ( 28 ) progression monitoring of inflammatory diseases and screening of abnormalities, ( 29 ) and could be used in conjunction with clinical and anatomical examinations. Thermography can be used for physiological analysis to detect physiological changes, as well as thermal and vascular abnormalities.…”

“…An increase in temperature of the breast is indicative of breast tissue abnormalities. In normal breast tissue, heat conductivity is represented by an increase in temperature of the skin, whereas in breast cancer, lesions under the surface of skin produce more heat and subsequently increase blood flow [12].…”

“…One type of medical imaging methods is breast thermography, which uses infrared cameras to detect patterns in breast surface temperature. Higher temperature than the surrounding area is a typical characteristic of a malignant lesion [1]. Ac-cording to comparing the effectiveness of the mammography, ultrasonography, and infrared thermography in screening and early diagnosis of breast cancer, there is no difference between the accuracy of mammography and ultrasonography (96.1% versus 95.8%) while the accuracy of infrared thermography is 97.1.…”
