Clinical Characteristics and Short-term Outcomes of Acute Low Frequency Sensorineural Hearing Loss With Vertigo

Abstract: Objectives This study analyzed short-term prognosis in patients with acute low frequency hearing loss (ALHL), and also investigate hearing recovery rates in patients with ALHL accompanied vertigo. Methods Retrospective medical record review of the patients who received treatment for ALHL between June 2005 and June 2015 were analyzed. Of the 84 patients, 53 were without vertigo, and 31 were with vertigo. Of the 31 patients, eight were treated with steroids, seven with diuretics alone, and 16 with both. Clinical … Show more

“…In the case of partial frequency or mild to moderate hearing loss, the patient can make up for the results caused by overall adjustment or compensation, so as not having vertigo. However, some research showed that patients with low-frequency hearing loss may also have more vertigo attacks, which may be because low-frequency hearing loss is related to endolymphatic hydrops ( 16 , 17 , 33 ). In our results, patients with profound SSNHL tended to suffer more vertigo attacks, which may be due to the small number of cases of low- and high-frequency sudden hearing loss in our study.…”

“…Younger age, low-grade severity of initial hearing loss, early treatment, and female are good prognostic factors [20]. On the other hand, accompanying tinnitus, occurrence of vertigo, bilateral involvement, longer symptom duration, and 1 kHz involvement are poor prognostic factors [18,21,22].…”

“…Overall, the pooled effect estimates showed that there was no significant difference between the steroids alone group and the combination treatment group (OR, 1.15; 95% CI, 0.51 to 2.59; p = 0.74; I 2 = 34%) (Figure 2). ment alone versus combination treatment with steroids and diuretics [9][10][11]20].
