Clinical Characteristics and Treatment Outcome Of CNS Involvement (Bing-Neel Syndrome) In Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia

Abstract: Background Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinaemia (WM) is an IgM secreting lymphoplasmocytic lymphoma characterized by involvement mainly in the bone marrow, and occasionally in the lymph nodes and spleen. Central nervous system involvement of WM, known as Bing-Neel syndrome (BNS), is very uncommon and as such the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes remain to be clarified. Methods We evaluated the incidence, clinical ch… Show more

“…According to analysis by Kulkarni et al, 13 (0.8%) out of total 1523 WM patients had BNS. 5 Whenever patients with WM present with altered mental status, a prompt neurological evaluation with an MRI of the brain and CSF studies are warranted. Simon et al studied 44 patients with BNS where 80% patients had CNS abnormalities on imaging.…”

“…However complications may occur that may worsen the prognosis, BNS being one of the rare options. The prevalence of BNS in LPL/WM has been estimated as less than 1% [4], however, it is largely unknown and because of the rarity of the disease it might be underdiagnosed. The clinical symptoms are both diverse and nonspecific as the neurologic status may be due to hyperviscosity syndrome or by a direct tumor infiltration.…”

“…The incidence of BNS is unknown, but in a retrospective cohort of 1523 WM patients only 13 patients with BNS were identified. (Kulkarni et al , ). The prognosis has typically been poor.…”
