Clinical Characteristics Associated with Suicidal Attempt and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Korean Adolescents

Abstract: Suicidal attempt (SA) is a nonfatal self-directed injurious behavior with any intent to die as a result of the behavior. 1 SA in adolescents is assumed as a shared endpoint of chronic problems, like depressive disorder, substance abuse and stressful events. 2 The risk factors for SA known to as male sex, low socioeconomic status, parental separation, divorce or death, parental mental disorders, mental disorder as depression, and substance misuse in adolescence. 3 SA has been used as a clinical marker for risk … Show more

“…With respect to psychiatric diagnosis, patients with self-harm were distributed a wide spectrum of diagnoses. The proportion of the disease group is close to that of a recent study with a Korean adolescent clinical sample, where 61.5% of the adolescent with NSSI were diagnosed with depressive disorder and 34.6% were diagnosed with bipolar disorder [21]. In the analysis that divided the self-harm group into three groups, the NSSI-D only and SBD only groups showed a significantly higher proportion of depressive disorder than both NSSI-D and SBD groups.…”

“…A meta-analysis reported that the overall prevalence of selfharm among Chinese adolescents was 22.37% (4). SAs and NSSI differ in terms of intention and lethality, but they also share many risk factors, including sociodemographic and educational factors, negative life events, family adversities, and mental illness factors; furthermore, NSSI was found to be strongly predictive of SAs (5). Both SAs and NSSI greatly impact the physical and mental health of adolescents and are associated with an increased risk of suicide, which places a greater burden on society.…”

“…Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is one of the most important mental health problems of adolescents worldwide and is defined as the deliberate, direct, and socially unacceptable destruction of body tissue, but without suicidal intent (1,2). It represents some of the strongest and most consistent predictors of future suicidal behavior across both inpatient and general populations (3)(4)(5). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) lists NSSI as an independent symptom that "needs further study", suggesting that it may be an independent mental disorder that requires more attention (6).…”
