Clinical Characteristics, Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Features, and Outcomes of Patients with Dilated Cardiomyopathy – An Experience from a South Asian Country

Abstract: Objectives: The objectives of the study were to evaluate the clinical presentation, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) features, and outcomes of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Material and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care center of Pakistan. All patients who underwent CMR for further evaluation of DCM during the period of 2011–2019 and in whom CMR confirmed the diagnosis of DCM, were included in the study. “…It is worth mentioning, however, that other important potential preexisting cardiac conditions not routinely seen in medical chart review may be missed in our study. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) [ 27 ], arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy [ 28 ], dilated cardiomyopathy [ 29 ] and cardiomyopathies induced by arrhythmias [ 30 ] may have normal LVEF on TTE and yet can still present with overt heart failure and even sudden cardiac death later in their disease. Moreso, these patients may present with symptoms not typical of HF, i.e., patients with HCM can present with syncope [ 27 ].…”
