Clinical characteristics of children infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Italy

Abstract: Background Since December 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) emerged in Wuhan and spread rapidly worldwide. Despite the high number of people affected, data on clinical features and prognostic factors in children and adolescents are limited. We propose a retrospective study aimed to evaluate clinical characteristics of children infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Italy. Methods A pediatric population admitted with COVID-19 to Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospi… Show more

“…In relation to hospital admission rates (0.35%), ICU (0%) and mortality (0%), all values were far lower, significantly, than the population averages. These data do not differ too much from other experiences already published [26][27][28][29] and reinforce the initial plan that vaccination is not a priority in these groups [30][31][32].…”

“…There are several hypotheses on the mechanisms underlying the lower susceptibility of children to COVID-19 infection than adults [ 178 , 179 ]. First, there is a lower expression of the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor to which the virus would bind to enter cells [ 180 ].…”

“…Among underlying diseases, chronic lung disease was the most common followed by cardiovascular disorder and immunosuppressive disease [ 32 ]. Malnutrition, cancers and kidney diseases were also implicated [ 178 ]. Respiratory syncytial virus and Enterobacter aerogenes were implicated [ 87 , 194 ].…”

“…Therefore, following their research developments and trends may help us understand the forefront of pediatric COVID-19 academics. For example, researchers focused on clinically relevant research of COVID-19 in children, such as the diagnosis (25,26), clinical features (27,28), clinical management (29)(30)(31), and treatment of COVID-19 in combination with other diseases (32,33). The articles by Shao are mainly related to the differentiation of COVID-19 and other pulmonary infections in children (34)(35)(36), clinical and computed tomography features (37)(38)(39)(40), and COVID-19-related immunology studies (41)(42)(43).…”
