Clinical characteristics of optic neuritis phenotypes in a 3-year follow-up Chinese cohort

Abstract: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of optic neuritis (ON) with different phenotypes. This prospective study recruited patients with new-onset ON between January 2015 and March 2017 who were followed-up for 3 years. They were divided into the myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-seropositive (MOG-ON), aquaporin-4-seropositive (AQP4-ON), and double-seronegative (seronegative-ON) groups, and their clinical characteristics and imaging findings were evaluated and compared. Two-hundred-eighty patients (405 eyes… Show more

“…The present study noted a female predominance, particularly in NMOSD and double seronegative optic neuritis, which is in line with the findings of other reports [ 4 , 10 , 29 , 30 ]. Previously, Hussain et al hypothesized that testosterone could stimulate myelin repair [ 31 ].…”

“…In a 3-year-follow-up cohort in China, only 25% of the patients with AQP4-ON had a VA ≥20/25, and more than 45% had a VA <20/200, whereas 85% of the patients with MOG-ON had a VA ≥20/25. [ 21 ] Optic disc may be swelling at presentation. The prevalence of disc swelling is higher in MOG-ON than AQP4-ON.…”

“…Most of those studies focused on changes in RNFL and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thicknesses [4][5][6][7][8] . In fact, RNFL and GCIPL analyses performed using OCT have helped to characterize ON according to the etiology, such as aquaporin-4 (AQP4) immunoglobulin G (IgG)-related ON (AQP4-ON), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) IgG-related ON (MOG-ON), and multiple sclerosis (MS)-related ON (MS-ON) [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] .…”
