Clinical characteristics of sarcoidosis patients with systemic sclerosis‐specific autoantibody: Possible involvement of thymus and activation‐regulated chemokine and a review of the published works

Abstract: Sarcoidosis and systemic sclerosis (SSc) are both multisystem disorders of unknown etiology. Some cases having both sarcoidosis and SSc have been reported previously. The present study was to investigate clinical features in sarcoidosis patients who possessed SSc‐specific autoantibody. The pathophysiology of each disease, including shared pathways leading to the development of both conditions, is reviewed in addition to previous reports of patients with concomitant SSc and sarcoidosis. SSc‐specific autoantibod… Show more

“…Also, an overlap between sarcoidosis and connective tissue diseases (CTDs) had been extensively reported [ 101 ]. Accordingly, the presence of antinuclear antibodies has been found to be significantly higher in sarcoidosis patients than in healthy controls, despite their pathogenetic and prognostic relevance being still undefined in absence of the specific criteria for a diagnosis of CTD [ 102 , 103 ]. Moreover sarcoidosis has been reported as co-existing with systemic granulomatous vasculitides, as Takayasu arteritis [ 104 ].…”

“…Table 1 includes selected references demonstrating the reported incidence of overlap of sarcoidosis with other autoimmune diseases. Additionally, the presence of autoimmune autoantibodies for other diseases like autoimmune thyroid disease, systemic scleroderma, and RA in these overlap cases has also been studied to a limited extent and has found to be positive in varying quantities further suggesting a relationship between sarcoidosis and autoimmunity [61,62 ▪ ,63,64]. New research shows common pathogenic mechanisms with sarcoidosis and other autoimmune diseases, which offers an excellent opportunity to explore these respective biologic agents as novel therapies in patients with sarcoidosis [65].…”
