“…A retrospective case study of 93 inpatients in a mood disorders unit found that patients with treatment-resistant depression were significantly more likely to have subclinical or overt hypothyroidism than those with non-treatment-resistant depression (22% vs. 2%, p < 0.01) [ 97 ]. Wu et al [ 98 ] studied outcomes in non-autoimmune hypothyroidism and AITD groups among 1718 outpatients with treatment-naïve major depressive disorder (MDD). Although both groups were associated with the duration of MDD, Hamilton Depression Scale score, severity of anxiety, and MS, only the AITD group with subclinical hypothyroidism was associated with suicide attempts [ 98 ].…”

“…Given the association of MDD with autoimmune disorders, the suboptimal mitochondrial function and the dysregulated tryptophan-melatonin pathway, it has been proposed that some MDD presentations may be conceptualized as 'autoimmune' disorders, as with MDD presentations arising from subclinical hypothyroidism driven by thyroid autoimmunity [197]. These authors showed autoimmune thyroiditis to be significantly positively correlated with MDD and anxiety scores as well as metabolic syndrome and suicide attempts [197].…”

These authors showed autoimmune thyroiditis to be significantly positively correlated with MDD and anxiety scores as well as metabolic syndrome and suicide attempts [197]. Interestingly, the thyroid-stimulating hormone induces the melatonergic pathway enzymes in thyroid C-cells, which release melatonin to regulate the thyroid gland function, including by the direct regulation of thyroglobulin gene expression in follicular cells [198].…”

“…A systematic review on the topic highlighted that individuals with an anxiety disorder seem to be significantly more likely to have a co-occurring thyroid disorder ( Fischer and Ehlert, 2018 ). Intriguingly, a recent study explored the relationship between SH and anxiety symptom in young first-episode and drug-naïve patients with major depressive disorder ( Wu et al, 2023 ). The authors reported that high serum TSH level was associated with anxious major depressive disorder in young first-episode and drug-naïve individuals with major depressive disorder and SH, thus suggesting serum TSH level could be a possible biomarker for predicting anxiety symptoms, at least for the population considered in the study.…”
