“…We therefore studied plasma renin activity (PRA) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and found it elevated in a large percentage of them even in the presence of normal arterial blood pressure. This could be due to sodium wastage through damaged tubuli and correlate with the reported low prevalence of severe hypertension in lupus nephritis [2,7,15,16,23,27]. We report herein evidence to support this contention.…”

“…In this case, the previous biopsies had shown segmental glomerular sclerosis and slight interstitial changes. Finally, it is tempting to speculate that the presence of a salt-wasting tubular defect in lupus nephritis might be related to the rela tively low frequency of hypertension in SLE which in different series [2,15,16,23,27] of SLE patients varies from 8 to 25% and it is usually mild. Severe hypertension in SLE is usually associated with high corticosteroid doses or with renal insufficiency [15,40].…”

“…With our present 2 cases, a total of 36 cases will permit a meaningful review of SLE-myelopathy. 5 other cases have been mentioned, with little detail, among large surveys of SLE cases [Du bois, 1953;Armaz-Cruz et al, 1958;Bash and Vachtenheim, 1963;Nusonova and Konchakova. 1965;Sergenl et al, 1975], The results of the literature reviewed arc summa rized in table II. 32 of these 36 patients were female giving a female:male ratio of 8:1 which is approxi mately comparable to that in the literature [Siegal et al, 1965], Their ages ranged be tween 11 and 65 years with a mean of 34.5 years.…”

“…Although neck rigidity was reported in classic studies of SLE (5,6), aseptic meningitis is one of the least common of the neurologic manifestations of the disease and a number of studies have not mentioned it as one of its complications (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20). Cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities suggestive of meningeal inflammation have frequently been described i n association with a variety of the neurologic syndromes associated with SLE.…”
