Clinical effect of a fluoride-releasing and rechargeable primer in reducing white spot lesions during orthodontic treatment

Abstract: This study was performed to test the long-term efficacy of a highly filled resin primer (38%) that has superior fluoride release and recharge ability. Methods: Sixty patients were divided into 2 groups. In group 1, adhesive-coated brackets (APC Plus Victory series, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) were bonded with a fluoridereleasing and rechargeable primer (Opal Seal; Ultradent, South Jordan, Utah). In group 2, the same adhesive-coated brackets were bonded with a conventional primer (Transbond XT Primer; 3M Unitek… Show more

“…(17) Many studies evaluated the efficacy of fluoride releasing adhesives as non-patient dependent approach and topical fluoride exposure in reducing the enamel demineralization adjacent to the brackets. (6,18,19) In the present study, the mean SBS values in all adhesive systems were higher than the clinically acceptable SBS (5.9 to 7.8 MPa) as considered by Reynolds (20) , which means that all the tested adhesive systems can withstand the shear stress to an acceptable level. According to the results of the shear bond strength test, there were statistically significant differences among the tested adhesive system in water storage and acid challenge groups.…”

“…Thirteen were RCTs, out of which, where 11 studies used the split-mouth design and the other two a parallel-arm design 23 , 39 . Eleven of the included studies were non-RCTs, out of which 9 studies used the split-mouth design and the other 2 a parallel-arm design 27 , 40 . Eventually, 1117 patients (age range: 11–40 years) with at least 12,809 teeth being treated were included.…”
