Background: Proper gingival retraction improves the prognosis of crowns and bridges with sub gingival finishlines.Use of lasers assists the operator to achieve proper retraction with good clinical results.Aims: The present study was intended to assess the amount of lateral gingival retraction achieved quantitatively by using diode lasers. Settings and Design:Study was carried on 20 patients attended to a dental institution that underwent root canal treatment and indicated for fabrication of crowns. Material and Methods:Gingival retraction was carried out on 20 teeth and elastomeric impressions were obtained. Models retrieved from the impressions were sectioned and the lateral distance between finish line and the marginal gingival was measured using tool makers microscope. Retraction was measured in mid buccal, mesio buccal and disto buccal regions. Statistical Analysis:The values obtained were used to calculate the mean lateral retraction in microns. Results:Mean retraction values of 399.5 µm, 445.5 µm and 422.5µm were obtained in mid buccal, mesio buccal and disto buccal regions respectively. Conclusions:Gingival Retraction achieved was closer to the thickness of sulcular epithelium and greater than the minimum required retraction of 200um.

Evaluation of Effectiveness of Photodynamic Therapy With Low-level Diode Laser in Nonsurgical Treatment of Peri-implantitis

Introduction: Side effects related to antibiotic therapy for peri-implantitis are rare in laser therapy (LT); therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of LT and photodynamic therapy (PDT) on patients with primary peri-implantitis. Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 40 implants presenting primary peri-implantitis in 20 patients with a mean age of 52.6 years old were included using the simple sampling technique. Periodontal treatment comprising scaling and root planing (SRP) was accomplished for the whole mouth while mechanical debridement with titanium curettes and air polishing with sodium bicarbonate powder was accomplished around the implants. The implants were randomly divided into two groups and treated with LT (control) and PDT (test). The clinical indices were measured at baseline, 6 weeks and 3 months after treatment. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for analysis of microbial samples at baseline and 3-month follow-up. Data were analyzed with SPSS 20, using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Friedman's and MannWhitney tests (α = 0.05). Results: Both groups showed statistically significant improvements in terms of bleeding on probing (P < 0.001), probing pocket depth (PPD) (P = 0.006) and modified plaque index (P < 0.001), with no significant differences between the 2 groups (P > 0.05). The number of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (P = 0.022), Tannerella forsythia (P = 0.038) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P = 0.05) in the test group and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P = 0.015) in the control group significantly decreased. Conclusion:The results suggested that LT and PDT have significant short-term benefits in the treatment of primary peri-implantitis.

(6.6, 5.6, 4.5, 4.0, 3.6 and 3.1mm) and (6.6, 5.8. 4.8, 4.2, 3.9 and 3.5mm), PI were (2.7, 1.7, 1.2, 0.8, 0.4 and 0.2) and (2.7, 1.9, 1.4, 1.1, 0.9 ad 0.6), and BOP were (95, 66.7, 40,25, 11.7 and 1.6%) and (96.7, 75, 63,3, 45, 31.7 and 25%) for SG and CG respectively. The mean prevalence of Colony Forming Units (CFUs)/ml were (500, 430, 335, 205, 80 and 15) and (500, 455, 400, 325, 255 and 165) for SG and CG respectively. DL irradiation had revealed antimicrobial effects and reduction of inflammation, which supported healing periodontal pockets through microbial elimination than old methods.
