Clinical efficacy of thymosin alpha 1 combined with multi-modality chemotherapy and its effects on immune function of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with diabetes

Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of thymosin alpha 1 (Tα1) combined with multi-modality chemotherapy in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) complicated with diabetes and discuss the effects of such combination therapy on lymphocyte subsets and sputum levels of cytokines. Methods: A total of 120 patients with PTB complicated with diabetes admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of North China University of Science and Technology from January 2017 to January 2018 were included in this study a… Show more

“…Interestingly, thymosin alpha 1, a naturally occurring polypeptide with an excellent safety profile in the clinic, significantly attenuates disease severity in murine model of cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease lung fibrosis ( Wandel et al., 2020 ). In addition, thymosin alpha 1 has been proved to promote the IFN-γ production in the respiratory tract of pulmonary tuberculosis patients ( Wu et al., 2022 ). But whether thymosin alpha 1 administration could prevent the development of silicosis in workers with inhaled crystalline silica exposure merits future studies.…”

“…Furthermore, Tα1 can affect immune function by inducing and regulating the maturation of T and NK cells, activating lymphocytes, and regulating the secretion of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ, TNF-α, et al [41,44,45]. Upon binding to TLR receptors located on the surface of precursor T cells, Tα1 promotes their differentiation into cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CD8 + T cells, CTL) [29,31,46].…”

“…In addition, Tα-1 has been found to boost the physiological characteristics of Natural Killer (NK) cells in in-vivo system and also in HIV-positive individuals. This is significant, as NK activity tends to decrease in individuals with hepatitis C infections [4][5][6][7][8]. Furthermore, Tα-1 can promote the production of Th1 cytokines like IFN, IL-2, and IL-3, as well as the expression of IL-2 receptors, leading to a Th1 immunological response which is also linked with strong antiviral activity [9].…”
