Clinical Evaluation and Long-Term Follow-Up of Dogs Having Coronoidectomy for Elbow Incongruity

Abstract: A retrospective study was performed describing the clinical presentations, radiographic findings, and surgical outcomes of 17 dogs (18 elbows) following medial coronoidectomy for the treatment of elbow joint incongruity as a sole disease entity. Complete resolution of lameness was achieved in 100% of the cases. The mean radiographic arthrosis grade progressed in 70% of the cases. Results of this study indicate that resolution of clinical lameness may be achieved with medial coronoidectomy in dogs with elbow in… Show more

“…Apparently arthroscopic treatment of a medial coronoid problem can induce the development of a spur or a calcified body near the medial humeral epicondyle. Considering this, and knowing that osteoarthritis progresses after arthroscopic removal of medial coronoid disease, this finding supports the theory that concomitant epicondylar changes are related to the development of osteoarthritis (27)(28)(29).…”

“…The exact cause of MCD is debated but elbow incongruence has been reported as a primary contributor to pathogenesis of MCD. [3][4][5][6] Management of MCD remains controversial and currently no universally agreed approach exists. Results from reported studies vary but in general, describe a [233][234][235][236][237][238][239][240][241][242][243][244][245] 2009 return to normal function in the short-term with progression of OA in the medium-and long-term.…”

“…More aggressive arthroplasty to lower the joint surface of the MCP by motorized shaving during arthroscopic procedures has been advocated to ameliorate the effects of ''medial compartment'' pain associated with joint surface friction. 6,18 Surgical debridement of malaciac cartilage has been advocated to allow assessment of subchondral bone.…”
