Clinical evaluation of a collagen matrix to enhance the width of keratinized gingiva around dental implants

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of collagen matrix with apically positioned flap (APF) on the width of keratinized gingiva, comparing to the results of APF only and APF combined with free gingival graft (FGG) at the second implant surgery.MethodsNine patients were selected from those who had received treatments at the Department of Periodontics, Chosun University Dental Hospital, Gwangju, Korea. We performed APF, APF combined with FGG, and APF combined with collagen matrix coverage … Show more

“…() reviewed that KM is not a requisite for the maintenance of peri‐implant health if oral hygiene is adequate, but the presence of peri‐implant KM is generally advocated. Therefore clinicians usually seek methods to provide an adequate keratinized tissue around dental implants(Langer & Langer ; Landi & Sabatucci ; Lee et al. ).…”

“…For these reasons, the preservation of keratinized mucosa is one of the most important factors in implant maintenance. Several studies have indicated that the adequate width of keratinized mucosa for healthy tissues around dental implants is at least ≥2 mm [282930]. Although a lack of keratinized mucosa may not influence the long-term survival rate of implants [1], many studies have commonly shown that the presence of keratinized mucosa is more important around restorations and prostheses than natural tooth, irrespective of oral hygiene status [3132].…”

“…In the systematic review by Brito et al 13 the authors found three studies [21][22][23] showing higher index rate of bleeding in implants with keratinized tissue width around implants measuring less than 2mm. Adibrad et al 24 reported that the absence of an appropriate keratinized tissue area around the implant presents significantly larger buildup biofilm scores, gingival inflammation, bleeding on probing as well as marginal recession.…”
