Clinical Evaluation of an Enamel Matrix Protein Derivative Combined With a Bioactive Glass for the Treatment of Intrabony Periodontal Defects in Humans

Abstract: Within the limits of the present study, it can be concluded that both therapies led to significant improvements of the investigated clinical parameters, and the combination of enamel matrix derivative and bioactive glass does not seem to additionally improve the clinical outcome of the therapy.

“…3,4,5,32 The positive results of the control group (ABBM alone) are in accordance with findings from previous studies which had failed to show significant differences between treatment with ABBM alone or combinations of ABBM with enamel matrix derivative or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). 30,39 Although the results of this study suggest that treatment with ABBM-PRF may not have provided significantly better results than those obtained with ABBM alone, the possibility for PRF to show any beneficial effects over the control group might have been masked by the fact that treatment with ABBM alone resulted in significant improvement.…”

“…The results of clinical studies [15][16][17] , however, appear to contradict this proposition. In many clinical studies [18][19][20] , patients were treated using larger size β-TCP particles, with clearly more favorable results in terms of periodontal regeneration. To our knowledge, a direct comparison of the 2 types of β-TCP particle in combination with PDGF-BB in histologic study of the treatment of periodontal defects is lacking.…”
