ContentThe absence of fertility problems in male dogs after a single treatment with deslorelin acetate (Suprelorin Ò ) is well acknowledged. However, reports on the application of deslorelin in the bitch and information concerning fertility after implant treatment are still limited. In this retrospective study, data concerning induced and spontaneous oestruses of 39 bitches from 17 breeds, treated with deslorelin acetate implants (4.7 mg Suprelorin Ò , Virbac, France), were retrieved to assess post-treatment fertility (ovulation rate, pregnancy rate and litter size). Animals were grouped according to treatment characteristics: group 1 (Gr1) -females submitted to oestrus induction, showing natural oestruses afterwards (n = 19); group 2 (Gr2) -females re-implanted with 4.7 mg deslorelin acetate to re-induce oestrus, showing subsequent spontaneous post-implant oestruses (n = 7); and group 3 (Gr3) -females submitted to a 4.7 mg deslorelin acetate implant for oestrus suppression, evaluated at subsequent spontaneous post-implant oestruses (n = 13). Comparison of fertility traits between induced and post-treatment spontaneous oestruses in Gr1 and Gr2 (short treatments), or between spontaneous oestruses after long-treatment schedules (Gr 3) revealed a slightly better performance in spontaneous cycles compared with induced cycles: ovulation rate post-treatment was 97.1%, 94.1% and 94.4% and the pregnancy rate post-treatment was 91.2%, 88.9% and 84.6% for groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Nevertheless, fertility in induced and post-treatment oestruses was considered normal. Moreover, the individual litter size did not differ within groups between induced and spontaneous cycles. From these findings, we concluded that treatment with 4.7 mg deslorelin implants did not compromise the bitches' fertility in subsequent oestruses.

Contents Manipulation of the oestrous cycle of the bitch is a common request of pet owners for different reasons. On one side, clients may be interested in temporally preventing oestrus until the bitch has finished the performance career, or to manage the kennel in the presence of a stud dog and to avoid undesirable breeding. Additionally, clients with no interest to use their animal for breeding, may, for ethical reasons, prefer to avoid elective surgery such as ovariectomy, to control reproduction. On the other side, clients may want to induce oestrus to better control the time of birth, to use a male with limited availability during a specific time, or to reduce the duration of the interoestrous interval in bitches with a long oestrous cycle (>8 months). Both these options for oestrous manipulation are based on hormonal treatments. For oestrous prevention, synthetic progesterone has been used since the 1960s. Induction of oestrus has been established with reliable results using dopamine agonists in the late 1980s and more recently using GnRH agonists. This review is focusing on the current and recently available treatments to manipulate the oestrous cycle in the bitch.

ÖZETKedi ve köpekler ev veya bahçe içlerinde bakıldıklarından östrus sırasındaki davranışları sorun olabilmektedir. Bir batında fazla sayıda yavru yapabilmeleri, gebelik ve doğum sırasında karşılaşılan sorunlar nedeniyle çoğunlukla gebe kalmaları istenmemektedir. Uzun zamandır kedi ve köpek gibi ev hayvanlarında cerrahi kısırlaştırma güvenilir ve kalıcı tek kontrasepsiyon yöntemi olarak kullanılmaktadır. Ancak bu yöntemin geri dönüşümsüz olması ve cerrahi müdahale gerektirmesi önemli bir dezavantajdır. Bu derlemede köpek ve kedide üremenin denetlenmesinde yeni bir seçenek olarak kullanılan gonadotropinreleasing hormon (GnRH) agonistleri hakkında bilgi sunulacaktır. CONTROL OF REPRODUCTION WITH GNRH AGONISTS IN BITCH AND QUEENS ABSTRACTThe behavior of female dog and cat may be a problem when they are live inside of house or home garden. The owners of bitch and queen are generally unwilling to reproduction because of higher litter size in one whelping, risks of pregnancy and parturition. Neutering has been widely used in the sterilization of dogs and cats for a long time. However, surgical spaying procedure has important advantages like surgical risks and irreversibility. In this review, we aimed to present an information about new alternative control of reproduction in bitch and queen with GnRH agonists.
