Clinical Evaluation of Parkinson's‐Related Dysphonia

Abstract: Transoral collagen injection in patients with PRD is safe, well tolerated, and is an effective temporary method of subjectively improving voice and speech in selected patients with IPD. Reduction of glottal gap with collagen improves MPT and subglottal PTP. The resulting gain of vocal efficiency may reduce vocal fatigue and provide a useful adjunct to voice therapy for PRD.

“…The CAPE-V, an alternative to GRBAS, is an auditory perceptual assessment protocol developed in the USA in 2002 and increasingly used in both clinical practice and voice research [19,22,23]. Even if the reliability and validity of the CAPE-V has been the object of previous investigation [2,14,15], there is still a paucity of information on the clinical validity and reliability of this tool, and only limited data exist on its application in different cultures and different languages [19].…”

“…Similar observations were made by others. 25,26 Both mean loudness level and MPD are dependent on the vital and respiratory capacity. As these are compromised in PD patients, these also show progressive decline as the disease progresses.…”

“…Sewall et al conducted an investigation in order to determine if vocal fold injection of Cymetra, which micronized form of collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, is associated with changes in dysphonic voice characteristics in subjects with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD), and presented the acoustic and aerodynamic measurements of voice are the most reflective of any observed perceptual changes in voice. Transoral collagen injection in patients with Parkinson's-related dysphonia is safe, well tolerated, and an effective temporary method of subjectively improving voice and speech in selected patients with IPD [8].…”
