Clinical Evaluation of the Retention of Different Pit and Fissure Sealants: A 1-Year Study

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the retention of different pit and fissure sealants on the first permanent molars over a period of one year.Materials and methods: In this study, a total of 40 children with all first permanent molars erupted received four different pit and fissure sealants. The children were evaluated at 6 and 12 months. Results: The data was subjected to Chi-square test and Kaplan Meier survival analysis. The p-value was calculated using Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test.… Show more

“…Theoretically, penetration is inversely proportional to viscosity. Thus, an unfilled resin would be penetrated more deeply into the fissure system and, therefore, perhaps be better retained according to the results of previous studies 21,34) . In this regard, the unfilled, resin-based sealant Clinpro Sealant showed the highest and the highly-filled resin-based sealant Grandio Seal showed the least penetration depth scores in non-invasive groups in this study.…”

“…In showed the presence of 58.8% of the study population having sealant placed in at least one of their teeth. Perceived reasons for this low utilization of sealants observed in our study maybe due to low utilization of dental services, lack of public knowledge regarding sealants and cost effectiveness [20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…In addition to the caries mechanism, the commonly assumed rationale of fissure sealant effects were integrated into the DAG, as follows: i) barrier function between acidogenic oral plaque bacteria and mineral crystals in tooth enamel (15), ii) sealing off oral plaque bacteria from carbohydrates (8), iii) exposure of mineral crystals in the tooth enamel to fluoride released from sealant materials (9).…”

“…Within the established DAG of the caries mechanism (14) and the rationale for fissure sealant effects (8,9,15), the logical framework of the proposition that sealant retention is a proxy outcome for caries prevention was investigated. For this purpose, the logical rules of Hypothetical syllogism (HS) and Reductio ad absurdum (RAA), as well as the logical Law of double negation (LDN) and the Law of contradiction (LOC) were applied.…”
