Clinical Evaluation of Tumor Imaging with201TI Chloride

Abstract: 201TI was used as an imaging agent in 173 malignant tumors and 76 benign lesions. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 0.64, 0.61, and 0.63, respectively. Sensitivity was good in thyroid cancer (0.91) and fair in primary lung cancer (0.70) and primary liver cancer (0.71). Compared with 67Ga, 201TI appears to have a higher sensitivity in thyroid cancer and nearly the same sensitivity in primary lung cancer. 201TI might be useful in distinguishing cold thyroid nodules and in differentiating primary li… Show more

“…The number of radiopharmaceuticals, such as 2°~T1, proposed for tumour imaging is in the hundreds, and some have achieved widespread acceptance in clinical imaging [14][15][16][17]. 2°~T1 has been shown to be an effective radiopharmaceutical in the detection of many types of malignancy [16][17][18][19].…”

“…2°~T1 has been shown to be an effective radiopharmaceutical in the detection of many types of malignancy [16][17][18][19]. In a series of malignancies evaluated by Hisada et al, two patients were shown to have primary carcinomas of the breast by means of 2°~T1 imaging [16]. Hassan et al demonstrated that 2°~T1 accumulated in 20 of 20 patients with primary carcinomas of the breast [8].…”

“…The number of radiopharmaceuticals proposed for tumour imaging is in the hundreds, but only two simple cations, gallium-67 and thallium-201, have achieved widespread acceptance in clinical imaging [4,[7][8][9]. However, poor emission characteristics, problems in respect of delayed imaging time and cyclotron production, and lack of specificity are significant disadvantages of these agents.…”

“…Thallium-201 has been used to evaluate tumour viability [15][16][17][18][19][20], because, like potassium, 2°aT1 passes intracellularly to viable tumour and shows rapid clearance from blood [21]. Particularly for the evaluation of the viability of intracerebral lesions, use of 2°1T1 has been advocated because of its low uptake by normal brain [7,22,23].…”
