“…In all the reported cases of this complication, the clotted cannula was in an arm artery. Infected pulmonary emboli have been described as a consequence of de-clotting (Pendras and Erikson, 1965) but we have not noted any symptoms arising from the repeated dislodgement of clots from the venous cannula into the circulation. In one case of a patient who died following over 50 de-clotting episodes (Massey et al, 1965) no evidence of embolism was found when the lungs were sectioned at post-mortem.…”

“…Today this group and the National Kidney Centre together support 56 patients and have had only 2 deaths in about 80 patient-years. Low mortality rates have also been reported from several American, British and Continental centres (Pendras & Erickson 1965, Wing et al 1967, Dalla Rosa et al 1967, McDonald et al 1967) but it is very doubtful if these results can be extrapolated to the next generation. Several features character-ize these pioneer units of exceptional achievement: a dedicated, almost full-time, professional staff; a refusal to accept anything less than the finest equipment, regardless of its initial cost; and a group of patients who came seeking their treatment, often on their own initiative.…”
