Clinical Feasibility of 3-Dimensional Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography Using Compressed Sensing

Abstract: Compressed sensing MRCP using incoherent undersampling combined with CS reconstruction provided comparable image quality to conventional MRCP while reducing the acquisition time to within a single breath-hold (16 seconds).

“…In a recent study of 80 clinical patients who received 3D MRCP at 3T, the authors observed severe respiratory artifacts in 18.3% patients with conventional NT‐MRCP . In a similarly designed study of 84 clinical patients, 16.7–22.2% of the 3D NT‐MRCP images were considered indeterminate for detecting bile duct anatomic variations, due to image quality degradation by artifacts . In the current study, both BH‐CS‐MRCP and NT‐CS‐MRCP had a low incidence of artifacts, and BH‐CS MRCP allowed a 7.5‐fold time reduction in data acquisition, which is more efficient for clinical practice and may improve patient convenience.…”

“…Two more studies used the same BH‐CS‐MRCP prototype (the “original BH‐CS‐MRCP protocol” in our study). Although BH‐CS‐MRCP depicts the bile ducts clearly with high efficiency, it was shown that it is more limited in revealing the smaller pancreatic ducts . The diagnostic performance of several pancreatic duct‐related pathologies, including ductal anomaly, duct penetrating sign, abnormal branch pancreatic ducts, and communication between a cystic lesion to the pancreatic duct was generally lower with the original BH‐CS‐MRCP .…”

“…Recently, the compressed sensing (CS) algorithm has been tried in some 3D examinations, such as MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), knee joints, and MRA . Reconstructed with sparse undersampling of k ‐space data by exploiting image redundancies led a scanning time reduction .…”
