Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are common causes of conjunctivitis. This study describes the epidemiological features and characterizes by phylogenetic analysis HAdVs isolated from patients with conjunctivitis in Tunisia, North Africa. Data on out-patients presenting with conjunctivitis during 2 years (2012-2013) were analyzed. Conjunctival swabs obtained from 240 patients were assessed for the presence of HAdVs by PCR amplification on the fiber and hexon genes. Positive PCR products, together with those of nine viral isolates from previous years, were sequenced and analyzed phylogenetically. Conjunctivitis represented 11.5% of all reasons of consultations with a slight increase between mid-March and mid-June. Sixty-five percent of samples (n = 156) revealed positive by at least one PCR test. PCR amplification in the hexon gene was slightly more sensitive as compared to the fiber gene. Genotyping in the two genomic regions gave concordant results for almost all isolates. HAdV-D8 was the most predominant genotype (87.6%) and was detected continuously from 2000 to 2013. Minor co-circulating genotypes including HAdV-E4, HAdV-B3, HAdV-B55, and HAdV-D37 were identified; most of them were detected by amplification in the hexon gene. In conclusion, this work reports molecular data on adenoviral conjunctivitis from a region where such information is scarce and contributes to a better knowledge of the worldwide distribution of causative genotypes. It revealed a predominance and endemic circulation of HAdV-D8, a genotype that was mainly reported from epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. It shows that PCR amplification in two different genomic regions enhances the sensitivity of HAdV detection in clinical samples and the identification of minor genotypes. J. Med. The aim of this study was to report the emergence of a recombinant human mastadenovirus (HAdV) type 85 (HAdV-85) and to describe its genomic and clinical characteristics. The strains were detected and identified in Japan in cases of adenoviral conjunctivitis including epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). The type was designated as HAdV-85 based on the novel combination of penton base (P = HAdV-37), hexon (H = HAdV-19), and fiber (F = HAdV-8). The whole genome sequence determined for HAdV-85 was compared against sequences of other types in the same species. The results of the phylogenetic analysis suggested a recombinant origin between HAdV-53 and HAdV-64, which have been two major causes of adenoviral EKC in Japan over the past decade. During the period between 2008 and 2016 in Kumamoto city, southwest of Japan, 311 cases diagnosed with conjunctivitis were diagnosed as being the consequence of adenoviral infections. Among them, 11 cases were determined to have been caused by HAdV-85 since 2015. Thus, HAdV-85 could be an emerging causative agent of adenoviral conjunctivitis.

Hastaların cinsiyeti, yaşı, etkilenen gözü, yakınlarında aynı göz belirtileri olan kişi-lerin olup olmadığı, havuz veya denize girme öyküleri kaydedildi. Biyomikroskopi ile ön segment muayenelerinde foliküler konjonktivit görülen hastalar konjonktiva hiperemisi, siliyer enjeksiyonu, kemozis, kapak ödemi, subkonjonktiva hemorajisi, kornea tutulumu ve psödomembran oluşumu açısından incelendi. Çalışmamızda adenoviral konjonktivitlerin daha çok hangi yaşlarda görüldüğü, bulaşıcılık durumunun olup olmadığı araştırıldı. Hastalarda kornea tutulumunun diğer faktörlerle ilişkisi değerlendirildi. B Bu ul lg gu ul la ar r: : Çalışma, 28 (%38,9) kadın, 44 (%61,1) erkek olmak üzere toplam 72 hasta ile yapıldı. Hastaların yaş ortalaması 19,35±15,27 (1-58) yıl idi. Muayene esnasında 16 (%22,2) hastanın sağ gözü, 15 (%20,9) hastanın sol gözü ve 41 (%56,9) hastanın her iki gözü etkilenmişti. Konjonktivitin ortaya çıkma şekli sorgulandığında 22 (%30,6) hastada bulaş yolu saptanmadı. Elli (%69,4) hastada yakın çevre kaynaklı bulaşma olduğu görüldü. Bulaşma görülen 50 hastadan 21 (%42) hastaya aile içinden, 3 (%6) hastaya yaşadıkları apartmanın sakinlerinden, 17 (%34) hastaya arkadaşlarından, 3 (%6) hastaya denizden, 4 (%8) hastaya daha önce gittikleri hastaneden, 2 (%4) hastaya kreşten bulaşıcılık olduğu öğrenildi. Korneal tutulum görülen 16 hastanın 11 (%68,8)'inde her iki gözde subepitelyal keratit izlendi. S So on nu uç ç: : Adenoviral konjonktivit, kişinin günlük faaliyetlerini etkileyerek yaşam kalitesini düşürebilir. Yüksek bulaşıcılık oranı olan bu konjonktivit tipinde hem klinisyenin hem de hastanın bulaşıcılık konusunda dikkatli olması öneril-melidir.

Abstract: To accurately diagnose adenoviral conjunctivitis in the early stage, bilateral conjunctival conditions, history of intrafamilial infection, and MSI should be checked, even in cases of mild or moderate follicular conjunctivitis.
