Clinical Infection in Burn Patients and the Consequences

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Burn injuries facilitate invasive infections and sepsis not only by destroying the continuity of the protective skin barrier but also through systemic effects. The burn wound, blood, and urine samples are frequently cultured to determine the pathogen agent. The aim of this study was to analyze pathogen growth in patients' cultures confirmed as "infection positive" by the hospital Infection Control Committee and to assess the clinical implications of these growths.

“…Mortality rate was significantly higher among patients who received respiratory support (p= 0.001). There is consensus in the literature that connection to mechanical ventilation and prolonged ventilation increase complications related to mechanical ventilation and, therefore, are associated with increased mortality (29)(30)(31). Nonetheless, it should be emphasized here that respiratory sup- port is an obligatory part of the treatment algorithm in patients with major burns.…”

Notably, the contamination by microbial agents is based on factors like patient's age and the area and depth of the burn wound…”
