Clinical interpretation of the Uremic Pruritus in Dialysis Patients (UP‐Dial) scale: a novel instrument for the assessment of uremic pruritus

Abstract: The estimated UP-Dial severity band can facilitate the interpretation of UP in practice-based research settings and can be used to support treatment decisions.

“…The set U of the possible banding was preferred as the optimal 10-item COVID-PSS cut-off scores based on the κ coefficient (online supplemental table S9) and AuROC (online supplemental table S10). The categorised scores were proposed as no/minimal (≤18), moderate (19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25) and high (≥26), reflecting public values and perspectives on the anchor-based questions. The AuROC demonstrated the following ranges: no/minimal (0.65-0.82), moderate (0.50-0.65) and high (0.75-0.80).…”

“…This inconsistency implies that a simple VAS may not be sufficient for predicting the overall effects of pruritus severity on outcomes. The Thai Renal Outcome Research group published a multidimensional assessment tool for UP, which included symptoms, signs, effects on sleep, and daily activities in 2017 [ 52 ]. This questionnaire may be adapted for future studies on UP.…”

“…The total score of UP-Dial also enables classifying the severity of itch. Moreover, Nochaiwong et al [ 22 ] proposed cut-off points of this instrument, which present as follows: ≤ 12 points indicate mild, 13-21 points moderate and ≥ 22 points severe itch.…”
