Clinical leadership and innovation

Abstract: This article suggests that effective clinical leadership leads to innovation. Innovation leads to change and that change leads to improvements in care, service, quality and professionalism. However, for this process to develop, clinical leadership needs to be clearly understood, clinical leaders need to be recognized, by their organizations and by themselves, and opportunities for genuine innovation and real change needs to be supported and fostered.

“…Encouraging IPC required supportive structures that included a culture that was inclusive of interprofessional socialisation practices and activity. As such, working to shape an organisation's culture needs to be facilitated in a way that identifies both the positive and negative aspects of that culture in order that lasting and meaningful change can be implemented and sustained (Stanley, 2011). Participants within this study recognised that changes in culture maybe required in order for IPC to take place.…”

“…This pilot highlights the immense benefit of releasing nurses not only from its own shackles of internally driven leadership dilemmas but also of the medical profession empowering and then handing nurses the clinical leadership role. This model of clinical leadership is gaining increasing attention within the nursing profession with improved clinical outcomes being shown against traditional models of nursing leadership (Stanley, 2011). This enables a proactive and autonomous style of nursing that is arguably more closely situated to the context of the patient than could be provided for by other health disciplines.…”
