Clinical magnetocardiography: Experience with a biomagnetic multichannel system

Abstract: The magnetic fields caused by the human heart's electrical activity were coherently recorded with a biomagnetic multichannel system (KRENIKON) during 1 to 10 minutes in 49 patients. 31 to 37 magnetic channels were recorded simultaneously with the ECG and respiration. Comparison of a magnetic index and the Sokolow-Lyon index to echocardiographic findings in the quantification of left ventricular hypertrophy demonstrated the superiority of the magnetocardiogram (MCG) as compared to the ECG. The magnetocardiograp… Show more

“…Despite the encouraging results of former studies using a multichannel MCG system inside a shielded setting, the method was limited by the high costs of the system itself. 15,25,28 The present data show the results of a much less expensive single-channel system not requiring a shielded room. A further confirmation of these results in a larger population would be an important step toward the aim of restricting invasive procedures such as coronary angiography to those patients in whom the diagnosis of CAD is confirmed prior to the procedure and in whom interventional therapy appears to be indicated.…”

“…[10][11][12][13] However, this method itself is also limited because of the time-consuming procedure of lead placement and registration. Analogous to BSPM, magnetocardiography (MCG) can register cardiac activity at multiple sites over the heart, 14,15 while the signal can be processed and analyzed in a fashion similar to the computerized ECG ( Fig. 1).…”

“…The magnetic fields both due to electrical stimulation in phantom studies and caused by cardiac excitation in patients (magnetocardiogram, MCG) were recorded with the 37-channel SQUID system Krenikon® (Siemens) inside a magnetically shielded room [9]. The MCG was recorded in supine position of the patient, simultaneous with 12 standard ECG leads and a respiration channel (see Fig.…”

“…However, it was not until the availability of multichannel SQUID systems installed in magnetically shielded rooms that the registration quality was sufficient for the development of clinical applications [7][8][9]. Making use of the available technology, we investigated the applicability and accuracy of multichannel magnetocardiographic recordings for non-invasive 3-dimensional localization in phantom and patient studies, by comparison to established reference methods, and, as a gold standard, by the confirmation of localization results through successful high frequency catheter ablation.…”
