Clinical Management of Tuberculosis Infection in Nonhuman Primates

Abstract

， Thirty two cases of tuberculosis infections in cercopithecid monkeys had been erlc 〔， unter ． ed at the Primate Research Institute ， Kyoto Ulliversit ｝ ・ ， during the period 〔 ｝f l 971 t〔) 1984． Among them ， in 1971， tuberculQsis outbreak of 21 Rhesus macaques occurred within p 〔， pulations that were under quaran − tine period and usually housed in the cage ro 〔エ ms ． These animals were diagnosed by pathological and bacte・ riological analyses ． The outbreaks werc caused by reservoir allirnals that had a 王 ready been infected before introduction ． In l985， two cases of suspected tuberculosis infections iTI chimpanzee and (，rang − utan were ob ・ served ， responding t〔｝ intradermal lnammalian old tuberculin (MOT) in the quarantine ｝ ・ ards ．2apes did n 〔 ｝tshowed any clinical symptoms ， nQr characteristic X ray findings， hematological and blood − chemistry values ， while lymphadenopathy were (， bserved in the orang − utan ． Bacteriol〔｝ gical trials f(，r detecting path − ogenic myc 〔 冫 bacteria from Laryllgo − pharyngeal and tracheal rnucus and gastro − washing juices showed nega − tivc results ． It is suPpog ． ed that 2 apes had already been infected before introduction by 2 zookeepers ， wh (丿 were under medication on tuberculosis ． Prophylactic ora 】 medication by Is〔miazid and Rifampicin were per − formed daily during Qne year ， m 〔 ，nitoring MOT reactions and bacterio1 〔 エ gical detections ． These suspected tuberculusis infections could be controlled successfully ． Key Words ： Tubercul〔)sis ， Il〔 〕1止 uman primate ， clinical management
