Clinical Manifestations and Treatment of Caries from 1953 to Global Changes in the 20th Century

Abstract: Manifestations and treatment of caries are strongly dependent on caries risk and the severity of the attacking factors which determine the degree of caries activity. Caries activity in turn will be modified and can be minimized by effective preventive measures. Exemplary cases and events will be discussed to illustrate what has happened since the establishment of ORCA 50 years ago.

“…Local anesthetic injection is usually required to allow the procedures to be performed painlessly. Recently, glass-ionomer materials have become popular for restoring cavities in root surfaces, due to their better esthetics and ability to bond to the tooth (Burgess and Gallo, 2002;König, 2004).…”

“…Despite the decline in caries prevalence and severity, in developed countries, over the past decades, caries remains an issue of increasing concern in developing countries [Konig, 2004;Marthaler, 2004;Petersen and Yamamoto, 2005]. There is sparse and inadequate epidemiological information on dental caries status and its determinants among the adult Israeli population.…”
