Clinical monitoring of early caries lesions using cross polarization optical coherence tomography

Abstract: New methods are needed for the nondestructive measurement of tooth demineralization and remineralization and to monitor the progression of incipient caries lesions (tooth decay) for effective nonsurgical intervention and to evaluate the performance of anti-caries treatments such as chemical treatments or laser irradiation. Studies have shown that optical coherence tomography (OCT) has great potential to fulfill this role, since it can be used to measure the depth and severity of early lesions with an axial res… Show more

“…Dentists and non‐dental health care providers alike would benefit from a quick, simple, precise, and accurate caries assessment method . Previous papers describe the use of OCT for dental caries detection ; however, to the best of our knowledge, there exist no studies that describe the use of OCT imaging to screen for caries in adults over 65 years of age.…”

“…Swept‐source OCT (SS‐OCT) is a variant of OCT , in which the light source is a tunable laser that sweeps near‐infrared wavelength light within millisecond‐scan delays at kilohertz rates to achieve real‐time imaging. Previous studies reported that SS‐OCT had a high degree of sensitivity and specificity to detect caries and enamel cracks . In addition to offering high resolution morphological images, the OCT signal can be used to estimate attenuation coefficient ( μ t ) of enamel and dentin .…”

“… 10 , 19 This study utilized a cross-polarization type OCT, which is a functional modification of SS-OCT that has been implemented in visualization of dental biofilms, enamel demineralization and remineralization. 16 , 17 Unlike SS-OCT, CP-OCT detects backscattered signals that are perpendicular to linearly polarized signals and omits the specular reflections. 17 Therefore, silver nitrate was used as a contrast agent to enhance the visualization of interfacial gap under CP-OCT.…”

“… 16 , 17 Unlike SS-OCT, CP-OCT detects backscattered signals that are perpendicular to linearly polarized signals and omits the specular reflections. 17 Therefore, silver nitrate was used as a contrast agent to enhance the visualization of interfacial gap under CP-OCT. The optical appearance of gap under CP-OCT in the form of bright white clusters of pixels results from light reflection caused by interaction between the incident light and silver particles diffused into the gap, rather than specular reflections as in SS-OCT. 20…”
