“…Muscle biopsy can be performed at the same time as nerve biopsy and be complementary in pathologies with nerve and muscle involvement, such as sarcoidosis, amyloidosis or systemic vasculitis, intravascular lymphoma, and mitochondrial disorders. 11 Some centers combine superficial fibular nerve biopsy with the peroneus brevis muscle in the evaluation of vasculitis, as some studies have pointed to slightly increased sensitivity of this combination over sural biopsy alone, although a comparison has never been formally undertaken in a randomized, controlled trial. 6 For pathologies associated with cutaneous lesions, such as leprosy, sarcoidosis, cutaneous vasculitis (as can be seen in systemic vasculitis), and amyloidosis, skin biopsy in association with dermatologic evaluation can be useful.…”
