“…The Palindrome catheter, with a symmetrical spiral end tip and laser-cut side slots, has the potential theoretical benefit of improved rheological performance, reduced propensity for thrombosis and CRBI, and hence enhanced catheter survival (6,(15)(16)(17). When compared with the Hemostar catheter, characterized by a staggered tip and machine-punched side holes, catheter survival was not different.…”

“…In this study, we find the coated catheter's mean indwell time to be 107 days. A recent paper by Spector et al 27 describing outcome with a similar design catheter without heparin coating showed that 13.9% of the catheters were removed due to clinical signs of infection compared with 10% (6 of 60) in this paper. The total infection rate with noncoated catheters was 1.4/1000 catheter‐days compared with 1.12/1000 catheter‐days in this paper.…”

“…14 It is estimated that catheter dysfunction accounts for 17-33% of untimely catheter removals. 24,25 Therefore, the lower incidence rate of low blood flow observed with symmetricaltip versus step-tip catheters in this study may be a contributing factor to the significantly longer mean dwell time associated with this catheter design.…”

“…1,10 The symmetrical-tip dialysis catheter (Tal PalindromeÔ, Covidien, Mansfield, MA) is a recent catheter design with a symmetric, spiral tip, and biased ports. 14 Results from previous studies suggest that the symmetrical-tip catheter has several functional advantages over other catheter designs; for example, lower rates of thrombosis and re-intervention compared with split distal tip catheters, 15 and a lower dysfunction rate compared with steptip catheters. 16 However, there is relatively little clinical data describing long-term performance of the symmetrical-tip catheter for chronic hemodialysis, as much of the existing clinical research was conducted over a timescale of only a few months.…”
