Clinical Outcomes After Arthroscopic Hip Labral Repair Using Looped Versus Pierced Suture Techniques

Abstract: This study showed equivalent HOS-ADL outcomes between looped, pierced, and combined labral repairs. Secondary outcome measures, including failure and revision rates, were not significantly different among the groups. Thus, suture type did not influence outcomes.

“…In comparison of looped versus pierced suture techniques for labral repair, statistically and clinically equivalent Hip Outcome Scores have been demonstrated at a mean 3-year follow-up [53]. In addition, no significant difference in revision or failure rates was observed.…”

“…This is a purported advantage of the labral base refixation technique, particularly in larger labra, where the blunting can compromise the physiological suction seal with the femoral head to a greater degree. The clinical impact, however, of the suture blunting the free edge of the labrum has not been found to compromise clinical outcomes 7, 8. Although outcomes from labral repair based on labral thickness have not been reported, one can visually optimize the placement of the labrum on the acetabular rim, and the toggle stitch technique is one tool to enhance rotational control of the labrum relative to the femoral head.…”

“…Next, unstable labral tears were addressed with midsubstance repair following conservative rim trimming using a motorized burr to create a bleeding bone surface. Midsubstance labral repair was performed using bioabsorbable suture anchors (OsteoRaptor, Smith & Nephew, Andover, MA or Gryphon BR, Depuy Mitek Sports, Raynam MA) with knots tied on the capsular side of the labrum [ 27 ] (Fig. 3 b).…”
