Clinical Outcomes of Colorectal Cancer in Kenya

Abstract: tients with sufficient information on CRC pathology, treatment and follow up were included. Patient profile, tumor sub-site, pathology details, recurrence and mortality data were collected. The primary outcome was CRC mortality. Secondary outcomes included rate of recurrences, time to mortality and recurrence and the associated patient and disease factors. Means (SD) or frequencies (%) for distributions were calculated. Outcome groups were compared for continuous and categorical variables using Students t-test… Show more

“…The mortality rates of CRC in East Africa have ranged from 10.5% to 29.4% which is higher than that reported in West Africa (6.1%) [16,46,57]. This high mortality may be due to the fact that many CRC patients in East Africa present at a late stage.…”

“…In East Africa many patients present at an advance stage and so a number of surgical interventions have been reported. The majority of surgical operations for rectal carcinoma are abdominoperineal resections which are performed in up to between 54%-71% of patients [46][47][48][49] due to the advanced stage of presentation of rectal tumors. Anterior resections for rectal tumors have been reported in only up to between 22% -26% of patients [46,49] possibly because of the lack of facilities to provide chemotherapy and radiotherapy pre-operatively in rectal carcinoma in East Africa due to the advanced stage of presentation of rectal carcinoma.…”

“…However many of these differences in survival are not entirely understood. 17 In East Africa and particularly in Uganda, the relationship of treatment in CRC patients to survival outcome remains unknown. A good indicator to detect the effectiveness of CRC treatment and early diagnosis in a population is through the analyses of cancer survival.…”

“…1,5 In an earlier study in Kenya, CRC mortality was worse in men. 6 The follow-up challenges were a major determinant of clinical outcome but the effect on HRQoL remains largely unknown. HRQoL scores for cancer patients are generally low but comparatively better in patients with limited metastases.…”
